The Corporate Look: How to Get Away With Sequins at the Office

For those of us who love sequins, we are perennially seeking for ways to wear them during the day without looking, well, like a social misfit. Diva Lady Gaga once said she wanted to “change the world one sequin at a time” but to convince everyone that a sequin jacket should become a fashion staple just like the blue jeans would be like asking Lady Gaga to dress a tad bit normally. So we found creative ways to wear the sequin one bit at a time instead. And whether or not we change the world by it, we keep calm and carry on.

1. The Sequin Tee

You can completely get away with a partially-sequined, sparkly tee by pairing it with denim or any fun, printed shorts or skirts. However, with a fully -sequined tee, you will most likely be getting more attention than usual. To tame the look, try softening it with a minimalist scarf or cardigan. Hint: Always buy a sequin top with the most subtle glitter especially when you plan to use it during the day.

2. The Sequin Blazer

Choosing a sequin blazer for the office boils down to 2 important elements: a tame color & a tailored cut. It is so much easier to throw on a sequin blazer (or jacket) for work when it is in a pastel shade. As opposed to black or navy, a white or pink coat is more refreshing and easier on the eye.

3. The Sequin Dress

Wearing the right dress to the office is chic and smart — wearing a sequin dress to the office is trendy (or trashy, depending on the design). Do you want to make a powerful statement at the next presentation? Do you feel the need to dress to impress? Considering the sequin dress may not be a classic choice but for a literally glittery change, traipsing to the boardroom in a sequin dress might just be your needed pizzazz.

Taming a sequin dress is relatively easy as you can quickly cover up with a coat, cardigan or blazer. Another tip is to avoid wearing metallic accessories — studded ones, for example. The shoes and handbag need to be nothing shiny, not even patent will work well. Instead, pick simple leather pumps such as the oxfords below.
